ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF QUARRY OPERATIONS ON THE DIVERSITY OF INSECTS IN THE ASHANTI REGION OF GHANA

Rock quarrying and stone crushing is a worldwide occurrence
of great concern. Like a lot other man-made operations
(anthropogenic factors), quarrying causes important
environmental impacts. Rocks are frequently blasted
using explosives, but this extraction technique results in
noise pollution, air pollution, destruction to biodiversity
and destruction to habitats. One of the paramount adverse
environmental effects of quarrying is destruction
to biodiversity. Arthropods occupy the broadest microhabitat
and niche variety and play important ecological
roles. This study therefore sought to assess the impact
of quarry operations on the diversity of insect. Specific
emphasis was placed on the effect of quarry operations
on species abundance and richness in a quarry site at
Mowire a town located near Kodie in the Ashanti Region
of Ghana.
