Until recent times, chemical processes and products were commercializedsolely on the strength of high technical and costperformances. Today we recognize the sustainability requiresthat health, environment and fairness performances also be integratedinto the value proposition of chemical products andprocesses. The foundational purpose of any field of chemistrythat proposes to make the chemical enterprise sustainable mustsurely be, first and foremost. to protect the plenitude of lifefrom the downsides of commercial chemicals. Such a purposeis more important in its field distinguishing qualities than advancingsociety by adding to the upsides of chemical commercethrough the invention of less hazardous products and processes.Today, the collective chemical enterprise represents an existentialthreat to the sustainability of our civilization that chemistslittle understand. This threat is arguably even faster actingthan climate change and originates primarily (to the best of ourunderstanding) in the endocrine disrupting properties of manychemicals, including some everyday-everywhere chemicals. Inthis presentation, I will (i) cover facts that identify endocrinedisruption as an existential threat to life on earth, (ii) show howendocrine disruptors can be identified experimentally, and (iii)touch on the iterative design process that we have used in theInstitute for Green Science that I direct to develop TAML andNewTAML catalysts to destroy endocrine disruptors in water. The technical performance of NewTAMLs is unprecedentedacross both chemistry and biology and has given birth to thenew field of Sustainable Ultradilute Oxidation Catalysis (SUDOC).
