Improving the effectiveness of the rehabilitation of patients with edentulism in need of a full mouth reconstruction

Dzalaeva Fatima

Objective. Improving the results of treatment and rehabilitation of edentulous patients based on the use of an interdisciplinary approach that takes into account the individual anatomical and functional characteristics.

Method. We have completed a single-center open-label prospective study, examination and treatment of 216 patients (age 44.3 ± 15.2 years, 126 men and 90 women) with partial or complete edentulism, tooth deformities after previously performed incorrect prosthodontic treatment and the need for full mouth restoration. The patients were divided into 2 groups: patients of group 1 (n = 109) were treated with standard orthodontic procedures, whilepatients of group 2 (n = 117) were treated using the proposed interdisciplinary approach to prosthodontic rehabilitation, wherethe individual results of assessment of the condition and function of the patient’s dentition were taken into account when planning the occlusion correction, with special attention paid to the assessment of the TMJ function.

Results.1-3 years after the start of treatment, the patients treated using the approach developed by us demonstrated statistically significantly lower (compared to the comparison group) levels of pain assessed with visual analogue scale (by 27.5-46.0%), the frequency of registration of a click in the temporomandibular joint (1.9-4.5 times less frequent) and pain during chewing (8.2-11.2 times less frequent). In addition, patients of Group 2 have showed a higher frequency of signs of the improvement of the temporomandibular joint condition according to results of condylography during the follow-up period, being 4-6 times more frequent as compared Group 1
